On Nov. 22, 2011, the Federal Communications Commission indicated a proposed order was circulating that would designate for hearing the applications of AT&T Inc. and Deutsche Telekom AG For Consent To Assign or Transfer Control of Licenses and Authorizations, WT Docket No. 11-65. On November 23, 2011, AT&T Inc. and Deutsche Telekom AG electronically withdrew without prejudice, as of that date, the pending applications listed in the Public Notice released by the Federal Communications Commission on April 28, 2011 in that proceeding. Associated manual notification of withdrawal filings also are being made.

AT&T Inc. and Deutsche Telekom AG are continuing to pursue the sale of Deutsche Telekom’s U.S. wireless assets to AT&T and are taking this step to facilitate the consideration of all options at the FCC and to focus their continuing efforts on obtaining antitrust clearance for the transaction from the Department of Justice, either through the litigation pending before the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, Case No. 1:11-cv-01560 (ESH) or alternate agency. As soon as practical, AT&T Inc. and Deutsche Telekom AG intend to seek the necessary FCC approval.

As a result of the FCC’s action, AT&T expects to recognize a pretax accountancy charge of $4 billion ($3 billion cash and $1 billion book value of spectrum) in the 4th quarter of 2011 to reflect the potential break up fees due Deutsche Telekom in the event the transaction does not receive regulatory approval.

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, smartphone shipments reached a record 24 million units in China during the third quarter of 2011. Smartphone shipments reached just 23 one thousand thousand units in the United States. China has overtaken the United States for the first metre to become the world’s largest smartphone market by volume.

Linda Sui, Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, “Smartphone shipments grew 58 percent sequentially to reach a track record 23.9 million units in China during Q3 2011. In contrast, smartphone shipments fell 7 percent sequentially to reach 23.3 million units in the United States. China has overtaken the United States for the first time to become the world’s largest smartphone market by volume.”

Tom Kang, Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “China’s rapid outgrowth has been driven by an increasing availability of smartphones in retail channels, aggressive subsidizing by operators of high-remnant models like the Apple iPhone, and an emerging wave of low-cost Android models from local Chinese brands such as ZTE. Nokia currently leads China’s smartphone market with 28 percent part, while HTC heads the United States smartphone marketplace with 24 percent share.”

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “The United States corpse the world’s largest smartphone market by revenue, but China has overtaken the United States in terms of volume. China is now at the forefront of the worldwide mobile computing microphone boom. China has become a large and maturation smartphone market that no hardware vendor, component maker or content developer can afford to ignore.”

4G is going mass market and it couldn’t be at a more opportune time, according to a new Yankee Group report, “4G Creates Opportunity for All Ecosystem Players.” Demand for mobile technology is increasing at a phenomenal pace. Between 2010 and 2015, the global installed base of smartphones will increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 33 percent. The pill market will move even faster, achieving a CAGR of 81 percent during the same period.

This growth in devices cannot be sustained without a significant upgrade in mobile network capacity. Enter 4G. Yankee Group’s forecast data predicts the combined total of LTE and WiMAX mobile lines will reach 675 million by 2015, up from just 31 million at the end of 2011.

“Stunning mobile data growth driven by broad adoption of smartphones, tablets and USB modems is pushing today’s 3G networks into the performance red zona,” said Declan Lonergan, Yankee Group research VP and co-author of the report. “The acceleration of 4G deployments is paramount to merging consumers’ insatiable appetites for content and applications on the go.”

Other findings include:

* Mobile video consumption is on the rise. More than 40 percent of smartphone owners in the U.S., U.K. and France are already watching video on their mobile devices at least once a week.

* Mobile broadband is moving beyond luxury. Over 40 percent of Europeans now rank mobile Internet access in their top three most important features when choosing a mobile handset.

* Consumer awareness of 4G remains patchy. According to a Yankee Group study, 44 percentage of consumers have either never heard of 4G or don’t understand what it means.
