According to the latest inquiry from Strategy Analytics, global tablet shipments reached 27 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011. Android jumped to a record 39 percent global contribution, while Apple iOS maintained its strong leadership at 58 percent.

Peter King, Director at Strategy Analytics, said, “Global tablet shipments reached an all-time high of 26.8 million units in Q4 2011, surging 150 percent from 10.7 1000000 in Q4 2010. Demand for tablets among consumer, business and education users remains strong. Apple shipped a robust 15.4 million iPads worldwide and maintained its strong market leadership with 58 percent share during the fourth quarter of 2011. Apple shrugged off the much-hyped terror from entrance-floor Android models this quarter.”

Neil Mawston, Executive Director at Strategy Analytics, added, “Android captured a record 39 percent share of global tablet shipments in Q4 2011, rising from 29 percent a year earlier. Global Android tablet shipments tripled annually to 10.5 1000000 units. Dozens of Android models distributed across multiple countries by numerous brands such as Amazon, Samsung, Asus and others have been driving volumes. Android is so far proving relatively popular with tablet manufacturers despite nagging concerns about fragmentation of Android’s operating system, user-port and app store ecosystem.”

Other findings from the research include:

* Global pill shipments hit 66.9 million units in full-class 2011, surging 260 percent from 18.6 million in full-class 2010. Consumers are increasingly buying tablets in preference to netbooks and even entry-level notebooks or desktops;

* Microsoft captured a niche 1 percent global tablet contribution in Q4 2011. The upcoming liberation of Windows 8 this year cannot come quickly enough for Microsoft, so its hardware partners can start competing more effectively in the tablet space.

As 2011 draws to a close Juniper Research has drawn up a list of predictions for the coming year, all neatly wrapped up as the top trends for the mobile and wireless industry for 2012. A complimentary report detailing the findings is available to download from the Juniper website today.

Recession Likely to Hit Smart Device Sales

There is a strong possibility that recessionary conditions will have an adverse impact on smartphone and tablet gross sales, particularly in the case of unsubsidised devices. Juniper’s view is that, given the extent to which smartphones have already become a near “must-have” device, the impingement here will be less significant than for tablets, where it whitethorn wellspring reduce the extent to which these devices penetrate the wider market, notably across Western Europe. The effect volition be most acutely felt in the premium tablet sector, where net device sales could plateau or even decline.

Conversely, the reduction in average purchasing power could conceivably benefit players such as Amazon and ARCHOS, inasmuch as cash-strapped consumers may opt for the lower berth-priced Kindle Fire or an ARNOVA-branded device rather than the iPad.

Top Ten Wireless Predictions for 2012

Please see below for a full list of the top ten wireless predictions, with each prediction explained in more detail in the complete whitepaper available to download from here on the Juniper Research website.

1. Recession Likely to Hit Smart Device Sales

2. London 2012 to Boost Mobile Advertising and M-Gambling, and Kickstart NFC

3. Mobile Coupons to Drive mCommerce Market Despite Economic Stagnation

4. 2012 – The Year of the Quad-Core Processor

5. Windows 8 OS to Fuel Nokia Revival & Disrupt Tablet Market

6. 2012 to see High Profile Malware Attacks on Mobile Devices

7. MEMs Accelerometers and Gyroscopes to Transform Sensor Market for Mobile Devices

8. Social Gaming to Become a Major Mobile Play with Introduction of Synchronous Gaming

9. Online, Mobile and Physical Will Begin to Fuse into One Retail Market

10. Cloud Mobility to Drive Collaborative Communications

Tough times up due north on the Canadian mobile view. At least, according to recent job cuts making the rounds. Last week ‘big redness’ Carl Rogers (New York Stock Exchange: RCI) announced a slashing of 900 jobs… and now, TELUS (NYSE: TU) has announced 125 occupation cuts from stage business solutions division… I should note these cuts are at direction level only.

Shawn Hall, a media dealings rep for TELUS noted:

“With the receding other businesses ar experiencing layoffs, some businesses are closing down, and there are fewer earphone customers. The telecommunications manufacture is hotly competitive at the consequence and is rapidly changing. The challenges are continuing and we’ll continue to adapt to them.”

I tin only promise the cuts glean the results TELUS is looking for… and they can re-hire ASAP. I’ve been more than pleased with TELUS over the shoemaker’s last stern of 2009… This is a bit of sad news to add to the catcher… But I’m hoping for rosy things in early 2010.

For those that whitethorn get the kick, the future whitethorn not be so friendly… But let’s hope all turns out for the topper in the year ahead.

Verizon (NYSE: VZ) is expected to welcome the Motorola (NYSE: MOT test) Sholes to its net in October. And, it looks like Sprint is looking to become the first base wireless aircraft carrier to offer a 4G WiMAX Android handset. PC World speculates that Sprint is preparing to launching a 4G Android smartphone made by Samsung in 2010.

Sprint has a bulk post in Clearwire’s WiMAX business, and has been pushing to get the net up and running across the US. WiMAX can whirl mobile broadband speeds several multiplication faster than anything T-Mobile River or AT&T (NYSE: T) tin service at the moment. So, it makes sense that Sprint wants to immediate payment in on the Android motion with a WiMAX French telephone.

If Sprint tin get this rumored 4G Android handset to marketplace in time, they might just be able to clinch the “world’s first” title. But, Verizon Wireless is gunning to light source up their subject 4G LTE network in early 2010. LTE offers much faster mobile broadband speeds than WiMAX, and if Verizon launches an LTE Android handset, it could damage Sprint.

For now, we father’t rich person much to go on. Just hold your eyes peeled for a 4G Android smartphone from Samsung departure to Sprint in the near future tense.
